May 2014: News from FAID – a report from our speech therapist Frozina

Like every year, Frozina, the speech therapist funded by Lebanon Trust, has sent us a detailed report about the problems she encounterered this year and the progress that she has observed in the deaf chidren at the school.

Children attend weekly group sessions as well as individual sessions. The classes concentrate on developing oral communication, improving voice quality (intensity, frequency), minimising alteration of words, developing comprehension of words and whole sentences, enlarging vocabulary, correcting different aspects of the children’s language, improving lip-reading skills.

On top of this, meetings with parents take place regularly, in collaboration with the school’s psychology department. The first goal of these meetings is to inform the adults about deafness, speech therapy, and language. Also, there are practical sessions aimed at teaching parents how they can motivate their children to practice oral language more and more in their daily life.

Thanks to these efforts, the youngest children (aged 3-6) make great progress in attention level and in developing a vocabulary appropriate for their level. Elementary school pupils start speaking spontaneously throughout their day, and learn to sing. Older children become more and more proficient in oral communication, although not without difficulty.

It is very encouraging that over the years a growing number of parents become interested and get involved in their children’s schooling and speech therapy, which in turn motives the children more and more.

December 2013: the volunteers of Lebanon Trust are back from a very successful trip to Lebanon

Despite the fragile political situation of the country, we just spent two very intense weeks in Lebanon. We worked at the Father Andeweg Institute for the Deaf (FAID) and, for the fourth consecutive year, we delivered the financing for a speech therapist for the deaf children. We are delighted to report that they flourish, and seeing their remarkable progress year over year is a real joy.

We also visited the kindergarten of the refugee camp of Chatila in Beirut, and delivered the funds for fixing the electricity generator there and for the ongoing support to the Burj el Shemali kindergarten in the South of the country.

In summary, this year’s results include:

  • The Father Andeweg Institute for the Deaf (FAID): Lebanon Trust financed a year of a speech therapist for the deaf children, who otherwise could not learn how to speak.
  • Practical work at FAID, financed & executed by Lebanon Trust: improvement of the schoolyard: removal of an unused chicked shed, reconstruction of the fence and reinforcement with metal sheets, complete repainting, installation of a net all along the top (to prevent the children from losing the ball when playing football). Fix and installation of the kindergarten playground furniture. Heavy trimming and removal of branches in the garden and outside the perimeter fence, to increase sunlight in the schoolyard. Complete redecoration of the Chapel: the walls have been painted anew, the beams, windows and doors revarnished inside and outside. The outside wall has been repainted as well. Several smaller maintenance and cleaning tasks have been taken care of, too.
  • Kindergarten of the refugee camp of Chatila in Beirut: full financing of the restoration of the generator room next to the playground on the roof.
  • Kindergarten of the refugee camp of Burj el Shemali in Tyre: ongoing financial support.

More information on this page. As always, a detailed report will be sent to all our donors.

November 2013: the volunteers of Lebanon Trust are going to Beirut once again!

On Friday 27th the new school year started at FAID. The school director, Krikor Khasholian, announces it in a message to all our volunteers and supporters:

Dear all,

Greetings from our large family of deaf children and staff in Lebanon!

Trust that this finds you well. We are all doing well here despite of the situation, which is getting worse.

We are glad to inform you that on Friday 27th of September Father Issam Ibrahim opened the current scholastic year with a Chapel Service with prayers and meditations. Students and members of the staff attended the Service.

This year we have 71 children from all areas in Lebanon. Our students present a mixture of the Lebanese society coming from different social backgrounds. At the moment, we are busy with a house full of children who are back to school after a long vacation. They have already settled to their studies and routine.

Our initiatives in developing and improving facilities and resources for pupils and students have been possible only because of the generous gifts, donations and support we receive form our sponsors and friends, without their work and effort the school would not be moving forward. It is a great challenge to see how these students are eager to learn, they need our full support.

We are looking forward to continue our work and efforts together to assist our wonderful children and to give them a better life with brighter future.

Our pupils and staff send their best wishes to you. Wishing you all the best in your important endeavours.

April 2013: News from the speech therapist at FAID

Frozina, the speech therapist funded by Lebanon Trust, compiled a very comprehensive report about her activities and progress with the deaf children at The Father Andeweg Institute for the Deaf in Beirut. The goals of her work include developing the children’s oral communication, improving their voice in terms of intensity and frequency, minimising word alteration to facilitate comprehension, expanding vocabulary and strengthening lip reading skills. Pupils benefit from both individual and group weekly sessions of speech therapy.

Preschool children (between 3 and 6 years of age) show dramatic improvements in their communication skills, both in expressing themselves through a good vocabulary and in understanding others. Elementary school pupils have progressed in their oral spontaneous communication and in their vocabulary, also thanks to teaching techniques such as songs, that the children truly enjoy. Older pupils still have to work on the structure of their sentences through further therapeutic measures.

Also, the children enjoyed a day on the snow in the beautiful Faraya mountains, north-east of Beirut.

For the first time this year our work extended to the South of the country, in the historical port city of Tyre, at the kindergarten of the refugee camp of Burj el Shemali.

This year’s results include:

  • The Father Andeweg Institute for the Deaf (FAID): Lebanon Trust financed a year of a speech therapist for the deaf children, who otherwise could not learn how to speak

June 2012: Lebanon Trust is granted the status of “Eligible Charity” by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners in Ireland

In addition to its existing Charity status (CHY 19091) recognised by the Irish authorities, Lebanon Trust has now been granted also the status of “Eligible Charity” for the purposes of Section 848A Taxes Consolidation Act 1997.

This means that in Ireland tax relief is available on donations of €250 or more in any one tax year, from both individual and corporate donors. Tax relief is applied to these donations at the donor’s marginal rate of tax.

How the tax relief is applied depends on which taxpaying category the donor falls into:

  1. In the case of PAYE taxpayers, the tax relief is applied at the marginal rate and is paid directly by the Revenue Commissioners to Lebanon Trust on receipt of the relevant appropriate certificate (an official form that is completed by the donor and Lebanon Trust).
  2. Individual taxpayers on self-assessment benefit directly from relief at the marginal rate by claiming the donation as a tax-deductible expense.
  3. Corporate donors simply claim a deduction for the donation as if it were a trading expense.

So in the first case the tax relief is paid directly to Lebanon Trust. In the cases 2 and 3 the donor receives the tax relief.

Please contact us for more information on this topic.

March 2012: update from the Father Andeweg Institute for the Deaf

Frozina, FAID’s speech therapist funded by Lebanon Trust, would like to update donors and volunteers on her work and the children’s progress.

She takes care of 27 of FAID’s children, aged 8 to 18, all wearing at least one hearing aid. They all attend regular weekly speech therapy sessions, individually as well as in groups. The therapy’s goals include: developing oral communication, improving control over their voice (intensity, frequency, timbre), perfecting their pronunciation, expanding their understanding of words and sentences, extending their vocabulary, strenghtening their lip-reading skills.

Frozina reports the following results: children aged 3-7 show a clear progress, in expressing themselves as well as in listening. Primary-school pupils have developed especially in their pronunciation and vocabulary, also in spontaneous daily conversation. Older children have improved their speaking skills too, but still show difficulties in structuring sentences. Besides, more work is needed to improve their spontaneous conversation.

The pictures on the left show the children at play on the snow during an excursion in the beautiful mountains at Faraya in Lebanon.

In the words of Krikor Khasholian, FAID’s Director:

On behalf of FAID, of its management, staff and pupils, I would like to express our deep appreciation of Lebanon Trust’s commitment to our Institute. Solely thanks to their fundraising efforts, we were able to employ a full-time speech therapist for the current school year, to teach our deaf children how to speak (which they otherwise could not learn). Also, the practical work carried out at the Institute by the volunteers themselves was instrumental for the proper usage and management of our facilities. Finally, their good humour was loved by the children, especially during a day of recreation and games that Lebanon Trust organised and ran.”

Also, Lebanon Trust visited the kindergarten in the refugee camp of Chatila in Beirut. It was a merry occasion of laughter, songs, candies and chocolates.
